This is an aggressive climb to a neat site This is a nice little hike past a stream, a rock garden for a glacier, through a forest then up a steep climb to the memorial site for an Air Mail pilot that crashed in the 30's. The memorial still has some of the metak from the plane.
Hiked this earlier this summer from the south side, coming in off route 192. It is a fave. Did not see a soul, not much sign of humanity aside from the plane parts and the few wrappers at the top which I picked up from around an ill-advised fire risk and illegal fire pit. But otherwise only some cairns and a couple sweet stone recliner seats to look out over the valley. Gotta hunt to stumble on these, I initially walked right by, they are there though, and shaded perfectly, with a heck of a view. Great place to crack some pistachios. Maybe 45 minutes up, with some steeper sections. Blazes are blue, run along the small trickle/pond to the left of the drive if you project the line of the drive straight up the hill. Bit of barbed wire to walk around, forget if I had to climb through some old tired fencing or not. Don't recall posted signage, pretty sure there wasn't any. Don't follow the jeep trail to the cabin at the end of it, the blue blazes scattered across the hill side behind it must be for timbering, or are just real random. (that is way too far right and is not close to any real trail, but if you go straight up, you will run into some old logging trail/hunting trail depression in the ground which you can follow east until it peters out after 30 minutes, return west until you see the creek coming out of the ground and going back in, the elaborate stick teepee 10' tall, and stumble on some more blue blazes which actually go to the memorial up to the right). lol
Pretty fun trail with a cool memorial site at the top. Can be steep as some points and the descent is tough when the sun starts going down but a fun hike!
Accessed from Greens Valley Road- easy to find the trail head. Follow the yellow blazes to the top of the mountain where the memorial is located. Nice short hike, definitely a workout with steep inclines and nearly a 600ft elevation gain. Trail upkeep was excellent but don't expect a lookout on the top with the thick ground cover. Memorial is small but neat with actual airplane parts from the crash.
Excellent hike from Green valley road. Another hiker informed us the trail can be accessed off of rte 192.
