Fire road hike with 1800 feet of climb through Dunn Forest From the parking lot go let around the gate and start a 1,500 foot climb up the 400 fire road. There will be a few branch off roads, but stay on the main road up past the quarry (which is a good place to rest and or turn around and hike back). Continue on to the "summit" which is only noticed because you gradually start heading down. As you start down, keep to the right and then follow the road as it descends 1,300 feet. As you descend, you'll come to a "T" where the 400 road goes left, and at this point you want to go right (key point) and follow this road down, then up a short but steep 300 elevation gain climb. As you descend again, you'll see the road to your left and you'll come to a "T" just above the gate, turn left and you are back to the car.
why call it the 400 rd loop when this rout never utilizes the 400 rd... very confusing.
They are doing quite a bit of logging at the top, but besides that it's still a beautiful hike.
Nice hike, beautiful day. At the top they have been doing some logging but still pretty views.
Our first time visit mtn. biking this route. I was expecting a long, steep climb the whole way, but found most of the route to be just about right for a pleasant ride with a nice work out thrown in. I stopped for a rest a couple times on the steep section, but that just means there is some challenge left for next time. Never got out of the fog all day. Had the place to ourselves (perfect!). Logging operations going on up top, though no one was around on the weekend.
