The North Carolina Zoo is located in the Uwharrie Mountains near the geographic center of the state. At over 2,000 acres, it is the largest walk-through zoo in the world. It has over 1,600 animals from more than 250 species primarily representing Africa and North America. There are over five miles of trails through the two exhibit regions. There also is an approximately mile-long hiking trail from the north end of the North American parking lot to the top of Purgatory Mountain.

Enjoyed roughing it on Moonshine Hill. Perfect way to spend a glorious autumn afternoon!

Nice mile long trail through the woods. The path was easy to follow and there were many signs posted throughout the trail. Could have been a nice view from the top but there was so many trees you could barely see around them, but they are planning on building a viewing tower later this year!
