Great overnight or 2 night loop on the quiet side of the smokies. The view down into Cade's cove is beautiful. The azaleas in June are amazing. Campsite 13 is pretty popular, you have to reserve a spot but campsites are reasonably spread out. The wind can be pretty crazy as the campsite is nestled in a saddle between two balds. It is a tough but manageable climb from twenty mile ranger station.
Hiked this trail with a buddy on 5/27/12-5/28/12 as an overnight hike. Tried making reservations ahead of time since some of the more popular sites require free registration. Never got through to an operator. We decided to stay at campsite 95 on the Wolf Ridge Trail. Fortunately a couple of hikers came up on us and highly suggested that we stay at site 13 which is .5 miles from Gregory Bald. I'm so glad that we took them up on the offer and was well rewarded with the location. Apparently site 13 is the place to be. Be sure to pack accordingly because the nights can be pretty chilly and windy even at the camp site.
The view from Gregory is astounding and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a strenuous hike that is rewarded with awesome and breath taking scenery. I would love to go back when the blueberries and blackberries are in season!
