Catawba Falls Trail is a 2.1 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Old Fort, NC that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
The moss along the waterfall had me mesmerized. This was one of the funniest hikes I've had with friends. If you go in the summer, you must jump in!!
We went today after a few days of the trailhead being closed, and discovered that it had been totally cleaned up. No longer is the trail "natural". Two bridges have been constructed for crossing, and soft dirt brought in to cover the walking ground. Trees have been cut down, and used as blockades to the previous trail, or remain laying on the side of the path.
The distance has been cut in half, so it is no longer 2 miles, and the trail that goes up to the top of the waterfall has been blocked and filled in with dirt.
The only vantage point for the waterfall is at the bottom, where all the hikers congregate because there is no where else to go.
One could climb up the rocks on the left, cross over the falls to get to a trail that looks like it could take you to the top, but if the falls are raging, this is very dangerous.
Even though the fall is beautiful, it has been ruined by maintenance. If you are looking for an easy hike with a beautiful reward, this is a great option. If you want a natural trail experience, look elsewhere.
One of the beat places in the area !! Favorite hike by far !
Popular destination so don't expect a quite trail experience. Moderate hike to the falls. Went during a drought so the falls were low.
Have hike this trail many times, always great.
Easy hike, but I can see how it gets pretty muddy after rain. The falls are slightly obstructed by growth and rocks, but you can get multiple perspectives if you climb around a bit.
This one was almost too easy, but it was really cool and the falls at the end were fantastic. Tucked not too far off of 40 in Old Fort, this was an easy stop on our trip.
It's the perfect easy to moderate hike. Great for beginners or those of us that haven't hiked in a while.
One of my favorite waterfalls in WNC. The trail is pretty gentle for the majority of the hike with a couple stream crossings and a mini scramble or two over a few rocks. From the base of Lower Falls to Upper Falls is tricky. Not to be hiked in wet weather. The falls themselves are gorgeous.
We took two adventurous dogs to the upper falls and thoroughly enjoyed it! Lots of fun! Recommend!
Fun trail. Not too hard. Last little section of trail is pretty steep and rocky, but well worth it!
