Bearwallow Mountain Trail is a 1.1 mile point-to-point trail located near Hendersonville, NC that offers scenic views and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round.
Hike the Bearwallow Mountain Trail to the scenic mountain summit Trail begins beyond an old, rusted gate; walk around it and look for the beginning of the trail on the right. Once inside the gate, locate the trail to the right of the gravel road. The trail switchbacks several times to begin its climb upon entering the forest. At 0.4 mi., ascend a set of elaborate, switchbacked rock stairs constructed by the Carolina Mountain Club Friday Crew. The trail switchbacks sharply at 0.5 mi. and levels out to provide a breather as it curves around Bearwallow's western ridge. Once on the mountain's northern slopes, climb several more sets of rock stairs at 0.7 mi. At 0.8 mi., the trail emerges into Bearwallow's beautiful mountaintop meadow; in summer, you will share the grassy bald with cattle. Intersect the gravel road just beyond and walk it to its end at the summit and fire tower.
Quick, easy hike. great views up top. well maintained with plenty of wildlife
I love this short hike. Hard, but short. Beautiful summit!!
Awesome, easy hike! We went when a storm was rolling in making the clouds unbelievable! Great views!
Fun hike, we like the grassy knob on the summit, fun for sunbathing and picnicking
Beautiful hike. The trail was well maintained and the greenery and rocks along the trail were very pretty. Watch for cow patties as you reach the end of the trail!
Great hike. Really cloudy at the top the day we hiked it. Will definitely do it again when it's clearer. Loved the random free range cattle on the hike.
The up hike took 20 minutes at a moderate pace. Along the way there aren't many clearings for views, but the greenery was beautiful and needed no compliment! In early June, the mountain laurel was in full bloom right at the top. I loved the view at the top! It was open, covered in yellow flowers, a perfect place for a picnic or to bring dogs. Will definitely make this a regular spot.
I thought it was easy to moderate but very gorgeous at the top
Hidden gem. The trail is moderate to difficult. The trail is easy to follow once you fine it and the top has almost 360 degree views
Easy hike. Great views in all directions.
BEAUTIFUL. Kind of creepy with some of the industrial stuff up there but still beautiful and very fun. Perfect for a picnic!!!
The hike was more strenuous than I anticipated in the way up the mountain, especially when it got super muddy near the top. It was so muddy, I actually wiped out on the way down.
That said, the amazing views from the expansive meadow at the top made the hike worth it.
This is a short hike of 2 miles, total, out and back. The summit is one of the prettiest that I've seen although not typical. It is a cow pasture with areas of exposed granite near the observation post. You can see for miles in every direction. I would recommend it and would do it again. It would be okay for families as well.
This place is a hidden treasure. A little hard to find if you aren't familiar with the area. The trail is moderate to difficult but worth the effort. It's summit, a grassy meadow with grazing cattle will not disappoint. The bald allows for breathtaking views. A historic firetower also occupies this summit.
Note: the tower is not open to the public year round only on certain dates.
