Wakely Mountain Trail is a 6.4 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Lake Pleasant, NY that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and snowshoeing and is accessible from September until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
The 3.2 mile hike to the summit consists of a 2 mile hike up an old, relatively flat road, (mountain bike/x-country option here) followed by a steeper 1 mile hike to the summit. Wakely Mountain is located in one of the more remote sections of the central Adirondack Mountains. The 3.2 mile hike to the 3744 foot summit consists of two sections: the first is nearly hiking two miles on what's left of an dirt old road, while climbing about 500 feet in elevation and then a relatively steep 1.2 mile climb to the summit with the remaining 1150 feet gained in elevation. The total elevation change is nearly 1650 feet. The summit is wooded, however, there is a fire tower with unobstructed 360-degree views. The 92 foot tower is one of the highest in New York State. The first 1.1 miles of the trail is really an old woods road that is severely washed out in places. You'll cross a stream and walk somewhat comfortably for another 0.8 miles to where the main trail leaves the old road. The overgrown old road continues another 300 feet or so toward the site of an old hunting camp next to a beaver pond/meadow. After you leave the old road, the second part of the hike begins and the character of the trail changes dramatically. The footing is not as good as the trail begins a steady and fairly steep ascent of about 1150 feet in the next 1.2 miles. There are a few switchbacks on this section. The summit area has the old fire tower, which is in desperate need of restoration.
Beautiful trail in the fall. The fire tower is crazy tall and there was a slight wind up there, which was a little scary. Overall, though, a nice hike through beautiful fall trees to an amazing view!
This is one of the towers that's off the beaten trail. The seasonal road that the trailhead is located on isn't as bad as some of the other ones I traveled. The first 2 miles are relatively flat with minimal elevation gain, but the last mile is the steepest part of the trail. Views from the tower was very nice. The bug activity was horrible so if you hike this, make sure that you spray yourself before hiking.
The directions on this app are garbage!!! Took me over an hour out of the way from the Wakely trailhead!! Thought this was a good app but will never trust it again
After only a mile in we stumble upon a fairly large black bear eating from a tree trunk about 50 feet from us. Took him or her a minute to realize we were there before running away! The last mile up, the steep incline, felt like 3 miles but the views up top were amazing!
Good view from atop of the tower fairly easy hike
