I started this trail from Rooster Comb off of Rt 73 in Keene Valley via the Great Trail ridge. It is a longer hike than the Wedge but offers better views from Rooster comb summit which is 2.5 miles from the Trailhead. I ascended Lower Wolfjaw from Hedgehog and upon reaching the Wolf's chin 0.5 miles from the LWJ summit you get awesome views across Johns Brook valley of the Brothers and Big Slide. The trail descends ~ 1000 feet into the notch where the Great Trail meets up with the St. Hubert's wedge trail and Wolfjaw Brook trails (which head over to John's Brook Lodge). The climb to Upper Wolfjaw is extremely steep and offers a false summit at 4085 feet, marked with a huge erratic at its summit. The actual UWJ summit is another 0.5 mile climb and marked with a trailhead sign 20 yards from its rocky ledge summit. The UWJ summit offers some pretty amazing NE to NW panoramic views. The overall hike is ~ 6.4 miles from the Rooster Comb trail. The return home is an out/back along the same trail for a total of 12.8 miles, or a loop trail to the Garden via the Wolfjaw Brook trail and the Johns Brook Lodge Trail for a total of 14.6 miles if you prefer the option of camping or staying in any of the Lean-to areas on your way through Johns Brook. It makes for a long day...but the views are incredible...well worth the hike!

Lead a group of 5 guys to upper wolf jaw 4 of the guys 1st high peak. We started and meet at 645am at hubert parking signed in at 7am. For december I was over dressed no need for snow clothes what a warm day. go AMR and follow to the West River Trail to the Wedge Brook Trail. This will bring us to both upper and lower wolf jaw. Then go back same way

Hike Distance: 11 miles
Vertical Gain: 4000'
Hike Time: 8 hours
He did it in winter and started at 8am and was able to get both in and be done by 4pm . The bottom was great started off easy then got steep only took 2 hrs to get to the crossing. Once we got the last mile well it took a lot longer then planned and very steep and icy needed spikes for it. It was very warm on top. Going down guys had hard time and i had hard time going up fun so we wide up not getting in lower wolf but got out and back to parking lot by 330

Did it with 70 lb packs. Would not care to repeat the experience except maybe without the packs. But the views aren't great, they are more of a necessary crossing to get to the better parts of the great range.

My husband and I did Upper Wolf Jaw along with Armstrong on the Great Range. We took the WedgeBrook Trail up and it was beautiful but the trail was extremely wet. This was our 11th and 12th High Peak but the hike was difficult because of the conditions. The WedgeBrook Waterfalls was pristine and beautiful, but this added to the extremely, persistent rain for weeks before really slowed us down. We came down the Gothics Trail with was even more difficult. We figured almost 15 miles out and back to where we parked in 13 hours.

This hike is listed as "dog friendly", but the starting point as shown is at the AMR trailhead where dogs are positively prohibited - even on a leash
