Rush Oak Openings Unique Area Trail is a 2.4 mile out and back trail located near Rush, New York that features a great forest setting and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is best used from June until October.
Rush Oak Openings is the only known intact oak opening remaining in New York State. Oak openings were very common in the Midwest prior to European settlement. Today, Rush Oak Openings is the easternmost remaining oak opening.
We hiked the trail on an unseasonably warm October day. It appears as if the trail is maintained by cutting the grass with a tractor- the initial entry off Five Pts Rd was a little choppy like hiking through a field. One you get into the woods, it is pretty. An easy hike, but It would be nice to have trail markers for the loops. Like to try this during the winter for x-c skiing / snowshoeing
