This is a long day hike from Adirondack Loj and heart Lake to two 46er peaks without maintained trails to their summits. You'll pass by a lake, and a massive slide going up Colden on the way to the start of the herd paths. When you start to head off trail onto the herdpaths please keep a close eye on the very accurate track in this guide and use it as a reference to stay on the right path. Cliff has a few views but Redfield has great views South over Allen.

all in all, a good review, but i read this after having done it myself. a few crucial pointers: DO NOT start from the adk loj. its much longer. just go to the upper works parking lot, which you can easily get directions to anywhere. . also, while you hike past colden dam going towards marcy and you pass by some river gorges from the opalescent, keep an eye out for a small rock cairn marking the start to cliff and redfield herd paths. it will be on your right, and directly across from a marked tent campsite. follow the trail with the cairn for a minute, and you come to another cairn with a piece of rusted metal on it. to your left is redfield, to the right is cliff. redfield follows the brook called "uphill brook" on your map, in case you get lost keep following the brook up. cliff is easier to find, and has some spray paint whenever it gets confusing. after 15 minutes of scrambling up rocks, dont think you have reached the top yet. keep following the herdpath down and up. I got to the cairn at around 9:30 with my dad, who is almost 70 and kind of slow. got back to upper works parking lot around 9 at night. this trip makes for an excellent overnight, and a very ambitious one-day.
