Eagle Cliff and Mohonk Lake Trail is a 6 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near New Paltz, NY that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is accessible from April until October.
There is a $20 fee to park on the Mohonk Mountain House grounds, or a $12 fee to park at Mohonk Preserve's West Trapps.
Very easy trail. I ended up going on the weekend and it was ~$30/person to go hike! But it was worth it since I rarely go up to these parts. There are a couple trails in this area, so it's hard to tell where you are some times. But all trials either lead to the top where that tower is or the bottom, where the lake is. Basically the short cuts are difficult, and straight up the mountain, but you can take the easy long way. You could probably take a motorized wheelchair up those easy paths if it had some tread. I would only go here if you had family from out of town. There are bathrooms, and a hotel and benches, so everyone can participate. If it were just me on a regular weekend, I wouldn't spend that kind of money.
Very easy, leisurely stroll suitable for all levels. Amazing views in all directions, including the skytop cliff, (which, if you get a chance, definitely go check out!!), the Catskills and the Gunks, as well as hints at the ADKs in the background. Views of the old hotel are also stellar. Mohonk is truly a hiker/climber's paradise.
love the lemon squeeze up the summit! Fun rock scramble.
It's the best if you do the squeeze lemon hike expensive but totally worth it!!
Beautiful views and a tad bit more difficult than expected. But worth it!
If you don't want to pay $20 plus to park on Mohonk Mountain House grounds, there is a cheaper alternative. Pay $12 at Mohonk Preserve's West Trapps parking lot on 44/55. Then pedal down the Overcliff Carriageway. At the end turn right and go a short distance hip Laurel Road and then climb upGiant's Path. At the top turn right and go up Humpty Dumpty Road and turn left on Woodland road and then climb up Eagle Cliff Ascent. These two rock climbs plus they great views of Skytop Tower and Mohonk Lake and the mountain house made it well worth it.
Beautiful views and a very easy trail.
My hike was way longer than 3 miles since it was the my first time at Mohonk area and we parked at one of those Parking lots way at the bottom of the trail. Yet, even though longer it is not demanding, maybe except for the distance. Leads mostly along the carriage roads, with beautiful views from the rim and the Mohonk Lake is like a little hidden treasure in the middle of the forest. I had a hand on a sling and didn't have any problems hiking any portion of the trail. Nice, relaxing hike not too far away from New York.
Very nice hike. The New Paltz area has a lot to offer for hiking. Mohonk is expensive for a day hike. However the trails are maintained very well and the staff on hand have excellent knowledge of the area and hikes in the surrounding areas. Great views.
The parking fee is a little more than a State Park but it's an experience. I've enjoyed this hike in various stages of my life: as a child, newly wed, and a mother and it really leaves an impression. I've stayed at the Mohonk House twice and that may be the reason. But it's not too overwhelming, yet you can climb over big boulders and picnic in private. It also gives you a little taste of rock climbing without any danger.
Very nice trail if you ask the locals there are a couple of swimming holes, perfect way to finish a hike.
The area around new paltz has a lot to offer. There a lot of trails for bikes hiking rock climbing sight seeing. There's something for everyone. O ya and its beautiful.
We went in early spring and I thought it was spectacular.
Been going to Mohonk for over 30 years & I'll admit the people and crowds have changed over the years but tis is just one of the most breath thing places in the world to hike...you must do the Lemon Squeeze while at Mohonk....its a difficult rock scramble but so worth the views especially from Sky Top....TIP* go hiking in the early hours or when tea is served at 4pm and the crowds are much less....
Too much money for too many people. Nice views. Nice terrain. Too crowded.
highway robbery. Most of the parking is on private grounds - run by the Mohonk "Preserve" or Mohonk Mountain House. They wanted $12 *per person.* Thats insane. Stick with the State parks.
