Short, steep hike to several outstanding viewpoints This is a pleasant, short hike to some outstanding viewpoints to the east, southwest, west and northeast. Its a great place for a picnic lunch. Starting at parking on Stonetown Rd, follow the road south for a short distance to the blue blazed Highlands Trail (just before junction with Westbrook Rd). Turn left (east) into the woods and begin a gradual climb up the south slope of Windbeam Mountain. You will see a few limited viewpoints along the way. The trail levels out, then after a short downhill section it joins the red & white blazed Stonetown Circular Trail. Together they climb to the top of Windbeam Mountain. Reaching the top you will come to several outstanding viewpoints, the best of which comes after a short descent into a shallow ravine and climb up the other side. From here, retrace your steps to the junction of the Highlands and Stonetown Circular Trail and return via the Stonetown Circular.
I parked at the sporting complex. walk back down the same road and enter the well marked trail just before the guard rail to your right on the opposite side of the street. the hike begins as a pleasant stroll through the woods and eventually turns into a pretty steep uphill climb. about a mile in you begin to get some awesome veiws especially if you explore off the trail a bit.. All in all you get some pretty cool veiws without having to do to strenuous of a hike.
Excellent hike with spectacular views! Follow the red / aqua trail to the top (you'll know when you're there)
Great views and a great hike that's a workout! I parked at the Stonetown Recreation Complex down the road then picked up the Stonetown Circular Trail a little ways down across the street. This trail eventually leads to the Highlands Trail which brings you to the beautiful views. I found that parking at the complex and picking up the red and white blazed Stonetown Circular Trail worked best because my car was off the road and I didn't have to walk further down to pick up the Highlands Trail; Stonetown road can get busy.
Short, very steep, hike to some spectacular views.
Remember to find the descent and go to the real peak!
You won't get much of a break from the steady climb upwards but the views are great.
