Views, Appalachian trail, Quite woods, wind swept summit We got out first snow flakes for the season. 10/2/03. This is the earliest I have seen snow in NJ. The fall colors are starting to come out. Peak should be in about 2-3 weeks. The hike starts on the A.T. Parking off of Deckertown. The terrain is fairly easy rolling in the start and rocky at times. You go through some nice hardwood forest with Mt laurel along the sides. Eventually the trail does a short climb to sunrise Mt. On top of the summit there is a big picnic pavilion you can go into to avoid the harsh winds. The summit itself is rare due to the harsh climate on top. The trees that grow are small and bent from the winds. In the summer it is not uncommon to see rattlesnakes bathing on the rocks. The views are great. You can see the wallkill valley, NJ Highlands, Pochuck Mtns, Delaware valley, Catskills, and the Poconos. This is also a great hike to do on snowshoes.

Great hike though ranging from moderate to difficult, typical rugged north Jersey trail surface. Steady uphill on the Cartwright Trail as well as being quite rocky, and a bit overgrown ( it's fantastic) as the trail comes to the peak and you can sit on a rock and look out over out over the valley for a great view. To make the loop 10 miles, pass Stony Book and take the (green) trail to the right. Be sure to beware of the colors on the trail markings as they are easily mistaken between the light green and dark green. It is also wise to have a park trail map handy. Enjoy this trail and take in the views.

From Stony Lake parking Swenson Trail (RED) to Cartwright (BROWN-RED) to AT (WHITE) to Stony Brook (BROWN) to Station (Light GREEN). To make the 10 mile loop, pass Stony Book and take the next trail instead, Tower (GREEN).

Great scenery. We try to hike this at least once a year. One of our dogs' favorites
