Overlook Rock - Norvin Green State Forest is a 3.3 mile out and back trail located near Hewitt, NJ and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Short hike over varied terrain to an outstanding overlook As of 6/30/08 this is a brand new trail. Eventually this will connect with another trail that is being planned and a nice loop hike can be made. For now it's out and back, with the option of returning via some of the woods roads that lace the area. Starting at the trailhead, climb to the ridge and continue along the ridgeline. The trail soon descends into a ravine, then climbs another ridge with a decent westerly view just off the trail. It then descends steeply on switchbacks, crosses a brook and eventually reaches the shore of Lake Sonoma, where a few nice views of the lake can be found. From here it climbs to Overlook Rock where there is an outstanding 180 degree easterly view. Return the way you came, or optionally take one of the woods roads back to your car.
We went for a short hike and ended up doing the whole thing. Beautiful views.
Hiked this today with a friend and enjoyed the trail. The moderate climbs were worth it for the views. There's a few intersections with rivers and some nice rocky overlooks. We did the trail in about 2.5 hours.
Saw a few people along the way but not many.
My one complaint would be that some sections of the trail could be better marked.
