Crab Lake is a 19 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Ely, MN and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, birding, and canoeing and is accessible from May until September.
We hiked this one in July, and were disappointed. Part of the trail was submerged and we couldn't get through the marshy area. The biggest issue, though, was the TICKS. They were horrible! I grew up being outside and have had the normal amount of tick interactions as a child and as an adult on this trip. The trail at Crab Lake was infested. I probably had 30 ticks on me that I just brushed off, and I was finding roaming ticks probably two hours afterwards (and after I'd shaken out my clothes and brushed my hair). I don't think I will ever attempt this trail again. However, my dog enjoyed the water (even with the ticks!) and the owners of the lodge near the trailhead are wonderful!
