Good beginner river to test out a new kayak or canoe. There are put ins and parking for drop cars on 11 mile near jewel rd or on 12 mile near algoma. An easy take out at Rockford, or portage over the dam and go to the grand river.
This used to be a great river with good trout fishing and amazing runs of Salmon and even better Steelhead. Thanks to suburban developers, it has been raped to the point of nothing more than a dirty creek a few easy miles from Grand Rapids. The bigger fish are in the lower river below the Rockford Dam. The prettier parts of the river with a few good brown trout holes are well above the dam. Start at 12 mile road and work up stream from there for 4-5 miles.
