Huron River - Oakwoods Metro Park Path is a 12.7 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Flat Rock, Michigan that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. I did the section from kensington metro park to island lake metro park. Very nice and relaxing kayaking trip. Island lake has canoe in camp sites which are easy to find and have vaulted toliets.
The Huron is so much more than just the waters near Flatrock. The upper reaches are far and away my preferred portions of the Huron. The navigable waters begin nominally at Commerce Lake in Commerce Township. If you wish, from there to Lake Erie is 5 or 6 days easily, 150 ? miles.
I personally have, over a 50 year span, canoed day long stretches many times, camped over night once on a two day. The highest starts have been Commerce Lake, the farthest down the river to Hudson Mills Metropark near Dexter. Total of that distance is perhaps 3 days. Most of that distance is in parks, a few backyards, camping only by pre arrangement at group camp areas of State and Metro parks, 5 possibles on the way.
Beautiful. Normal pleasant current. Through forests and lakes. The park in Milford to stop for lunch or an ice cream. In areas, quite a bit of dead fall ash trees. Four, and more as you go farther, short portages in that stretch around dams. I highly recommend it. Paddled many rivers now, US and Canada, some big trips, it always amazes me that one of the best is right here in my locale. It is among the best.
I like the Huron I have done many parts of the river. There are many places to get in and out from belville lake to lake Erie. The Huron has lots of places to stop and have lunch or take a break scenic most of it runs throw the Huron park systems you may have to pay a few dollars to get to some of the best ways in and out of the river
