I recommend starting this hike in the morning, as the sand can get very warm in the afternoon. Bring water and sunscreen if you plan to do the entire hike. The hike is a lot of fun and jumping into Lake Michigan when you reach the end feels great!

Much further and difficult than it looks, but great exercise and amazing beach/view at the end! Didn't wear shoes for the whole thing!

This is an intense hike. We made it over the first dune and stopped there. It is very strenuous and you will definitely need sunscreen and a lot of water. The sand is hot so shoes is a must.

Coming from flat Houston it was definitely a moderate hike for us, but beautiful and worth it!:)

Great fun trail, though definitely a challenge. Be smart and self aware when deciding to take this trail. I did a good portion of this without shoes but at some points the sand was too hot and I slipped on keens which helped but slowed me down.

3.75 miles - 2 hours - challenging - take water, a hat, and something for your feet if sand is hot. Go early while sand is harder from overnight moisture. This is a hard hike but absolutely worth it

It was amazing! It was also not for everyone. It felt like we walked 26 sand miles by the time we got back to the car.

My husband turned back about half way. He was smarter then the rest of us.

"The only thing MODERATE about this climb is your chances of having a heart attack." -Husband

Bring lots of water and sunscreen.

Lots of fun climbing over the dunes, but fairly limited shade. Barefeet are doable but it can get a little rugged. Its a pretty relaxed beach, but rocky, and a refreshing dip was a nice pay off

Fairly strenuous hike. Lots of fun climbing the dunes of varying grades. And the lake at the end is gorgeous! Very cold water year-round though, so be prepared for that if you plan on using it to refresh after a potentially very hot hike.

Great trek! The sand dunes make it challenging for a pretty good work out. We went in September on a beautiful 80 degree day. It took us about 3 hours to reach the lake & get back to the car. There is very little shade, so it was a hot one! Beautiful scenery, especially at the shore. Bring water, don't take off your shoes! I hope to return one day!

The dune climb is extremely difficult... walking in sand... as soon as you think "ah, the lake is over the next dune", please realize you are kidding yourself. The dune climb is about 3 hours of hot, shadeless, difficult hiking that is tough on everyone. BRING WATER! And start early. This is NOT one to do in the mid day sun.

Difficulty varies with weather; cold windy days and hot sunny ones increase the effort.
