The crown jewel of DNRTs Little River Reserve is the Boardwalk Trail, which features a 200-foot-long suspended boardwalk and viewing platform that takes hikers 15 feet above a red maple swamp for a birds eye view of the mound-and-pool wetland below. The Frank Knowles-Little River Reserve is part of a 500-acre block of publicly accessible protected land surrounding the headwaters of Dartmouths Little River. We can explore nearly 9 miles of hiking trails that wind through wetlands covered with ferns and mossy boulders, hillsides dominated by hulking yellow birch and white pine, glades of austere beeches, wide expanses of salt marsh, and old fields teeming with wildflowers and birdlife. A network of stone walls and several historic farmhouse and barn foundations harken back to the days when farms covered the land. The large contiguous forest areas make excellent wildlife habitat, including breeding habitat for bird species such as barred owl, wood thrush, and veery.

We went there Memorial Day Weekend. Red trail was a little busy with families with small kids but wasn't too bad. Decided to hike the blue trail. This was less traveled. The blue trail looped around back toward the red trail so it was an easy in and out. We ended up doing 7miles, found a couple of old rusted farm trucks and building foundations. Nice trail for families.

Great hike with family and dog. The suspension bridge and boardwalks were the highlight of the trip. However, it was so busy!
