A nice hike for anyone, but especially enjoyable if you are a geology enthusiast. Located less than 1 mile S of Louisville on the edge of the Liberty Lake reservoir. Originally an iron mine featuring a 2 foot (0.9 meter) thick hematite ore vein. Started around the time of the American Revolution. Later, it was exploited for copper and achieved a depth of over 400 feet with a shaft to that depth. Employed up to 100 miners at its peak. There are two large "tailing mounds" which contain some fantastic examples of the local geology. One is directly off the water around the half-way point of the hike. The other is at the top of the hill and is typically used as the turn around point.
