Climbing up the ski slopes of Sugarloaf for great views and then heading over to the ridge to Spaulding Mountain.
9/24/16: AT trail up to Sugarloaf and back. Parked at end of Caribou Pond Road by gate about 1/4 mi shy of AT. Road is very passable now. Bridges fixed.
Up to Summit from west side along AT. Difficulty of early water crossing will vary by season or rainfall. Was easy now. Mountain is somewhat steep in places and some scrambling. Tough for me with less experience; but the more experienced in the group said fairly easy. Beautiful 360 views from bare summit.
Despite being in 60's below, it was very cold and breezy at top. So bring gloves, hat, & layers. Once you're back down into the treeline you're protected from the winds.
Started near Crocker Cirque Camp area. Hiked to Sugarloaf via AT (great views on top) then to Spaulding (very disappointed view.) to MT Abrams (great views) to AT falls near Oberton stream exited via old railroad bed to Madrid. Car staging is important very difficult unimproved roads in some areas. 4x4 recommended.
