Baxter State Park Campground is located near Millinocket, Maine. The trail is primarily used for camping.
Park is somewhat primitive as is it's intention. Grocery store quite a few miles away and narrow dirt roads add to journey time so plan accordingly. Park rangers and welcome center staff do an excellent job in this park preparing campers and hikers for what to expect on site and trails. The park rules and regulations are quite strict and for good reason. A popular park with many visitors and no shortage of activities but throughout my stay constantly aware that this is wilderness.
Chimney Pond Trail was AWESOME! Mostly uphill, rocky terrain; follows a creek partway up. There are several picturesque ponds and streams, boardwalks, ending at Chimney Pond Campground at the base of Mt. Katahdin. Plan for wildlife viewing. Be sure to carry in plenty of water of water purification tablets.
