Bauneg Beg Conservation Area in North Berwick includes 89 acres of deciduous forest land surrounding the 866-foot, three-peaked Bauneg Beg Mountain. The land was acquired by Great Works Regional Land Trust in three parts over the course of seven months in 2000 and 2001. The 0.65-mile trail winds through a deciduous forest, a pine grove and a section of large boulders described as "Devil's Den" before reaching the highest of the three peaks. Trail forks just before the summit with a choice of routes to the top. Easier trail veers to the right. Rocky outcroppings offer views of nearby Mount Hope, parts of south Sanford and, according to Great Works Regional Land Trust, on a clear day, Mount Washington to the northwest and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast.
Such a good little hike if you only have an hour or 2! Just enough incline to get your heart beating and great for dogs too! Love this place.
Great hike with family and dog .... The view is probably better when there are no leaves on the trees. A few steep spots for a good leg workout .
Pleasantly surprised! A few moderate sections but well worth it!
Did this trail months ago. The ground was still frozen and it was muddy. The difficulty is moderate. We did it with a baby (8-9months) on a carrier. Has a nice view from the top. We will try it again now in the summer.
Fun afternoon hike. Very easy.
Great little walk my boyfriend and I did before lunch one day. There are only a few trails however the area is very scenic for being just outside of Sanford. Overall I really enjoyed these trails and will be back to do it again sometime. The iPhone app directions were way off and led us far from the actual parking lot. For reliable directions visit the conservation areas website which I included.
