Horine Reservation Red Trail is a 5.8 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Fairdale, KY that features beautiful wild flowers. The trail is rated as moderate and primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding.
This is a very well maintained loop located in the Horine Reservation of Jefferson Memorial Forest. Just like all of the other trails within the forest, it has very clear trail markers with the trail itself being very well kept. The Red Trail is the longest loop with an optional shortcut 3.1 miles
Well marked course. Nice steep climbs for walking.
Wasn't expecting it to be as narrow and have as many steep inclines/declines as it did. It was a major work out. You almost start to feel lost but as soon as you do you see a red marking of some sort to let you know you're on the right track. It's more miles than listed on the camp grounds, they have it listed as 4.2 when it's really about 6 miles long. So I wasn't fully prepared but still concurred it!
Little harder than thought. Have a ridge you snake down and then have to go up. But most of trail in good shape. Trail down ridge is narrow and fairly steep. But doable.
Shaded, nice workout!
It's shady the whole way and there's well water at the camp sites so it's a great hike for hot weather. Have done it three times now and I have hardly run into anyone on the trails.
The trail is shaded the entire way which is nice considering it was 90 out. The app makes it easy to navigate especially if you want to cut it short or go longer. It is a great trail!
Great trail. Good elevation changes. A little busy on weekends due to campers. Two good inclines that will give a brief challenge. Well marked.
Marked OK except for the junction that comes from the lake, back to the red trail and not marked how to get back to the parking lot. This is my beef with Jefferson Memorial Forest. None of the trails are adequately marked. There is 2 hard parts, for me at least, a steep incline on a ridgeline, and the switchbacks are are a little crazy, but other than that it's a good hike. Not much to see, but really pretty at the bottom. I ran into 4 hikers, all women, Girl Power and they had doggies. Good exercise. I did not go to the cemetery due to the crazy ridgeline.
Really nice, well marked trail. Shady with pretty views. Nice elevation changes.
This is a great trail. While it is mostly flat, there are a few parts that are not, but it isn't too bad overall. For more information and photos, please visit my website:
Good trail but not that well marked which means you can end up on the short cut by accident. Very forested, and it can get monotonous (no views or highlights). Pretty good variety of uphill and downhill.
The shortcut ref trail is easy. They full red trail should be rated at least moderate if not difficult. Very steep inclines and declines.
Relatively monotonous forest hike, but well-blazed, good to get your heart rate up, and generally unpopulated. Watch for idiots with loose dogs.
