Post Oak Self-Guiding Nature Trail is a 0.7 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Independence, Kansas that features a great forest setting and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and camping and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Post Oak Self Guiding Nature trail begins at the scenic overlook near the dam and winds through native timber identifying a number of the tree species. This 1mile trail located on the top of table mound is a relatively easy hike. The trailhead is located at the scenic overlook near the dam. The old-growth forest setting that this trail winds through is indicative of the Cross Timbers region. A wide variety of tree species can be found here with many specimens being well over 200 years in age.
