R Butte is a 1.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Menan, ID that offers scenic views. The trail is rated as moderate and primarily used for hiking.
I really enjoyed this hike (maybe because I was hiking it with my oldest daughter). The trail is actually about 3.5 miles long if you hike around the crater which I highly recommend since there are informational signs along the way. The signs do a nice job explaining the volcano's eruption and subsequent weathering. The hike up is a bit strenuous but not too bad if you take your time. We hiked it mid morning so it was still fairly cool.
Not the prettiest hike but a decent workout!
if you need a quick bit of solitude this is perfect! careful in warm weather, lots of R snakes!!!! steep incline at first but once you top out you can see forever!!
Steep 1 mile incline to get to the top of the butte. But once crested, it's all worth it. Breathtaking views all around the rim. Great path and fun terrain to keep your attention. Certainly a favorite.
Fun, easy, short hike. Be prepared for lots of wind at the top of the butte!!
Great view of the Snake River Plain, interesting rock formations. Stark beauty up close and grand vistas in the distance (including the Tetons). Footing can be a little treacherous towards the top. Very fine gravel/sand over angled rocks.
Not very well groomed, nothing beautiful either
Nice hike, just outside of Rexburg. Took the scouts up last week and went up the top and around the entire cone. Great views at sunrise and sunset. The switch backs got a little steep for some of the boys, but all in all a short steep hike with good views of the surrounding landscape. Runners and dog walkers are a common sight. My wife saw a pack of coyotes the other morning on her sunrise hike. Found a dead rattler with the scouts, so keep an eye out, but they are few and far between. Just hike smart.
Good moderate-hard trail run or hike. Beautiful view and peaceful place early in the morning around 6-8am.
fun trail close to town. I hike this one regularly to just get outside and enjoy nature. the trail only shows the ascent, but it actually goes all the way around the butte as well. beginners should take their time going up, it be be a bit of a climb. trail is very well marked and there are signs with info about nature all along the trail.
Great little hike, a bit steep for beginners. Amazing view!
Great hike. We spent a lot of time on the top. Great for a starter hike and for families.
The hidden East trail is much easier and more scenic. It leads you into the lava bowl and from there you can hike up to the rim and all the way around.
Just hit it up for a night hike with the bros. Average fit at average pace = 30 minutes up and 20 minutes down. Great hike with a great view. Trails a little sketchy, but they've got a chain to help. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a short fun hike.
Fun hike. Steep trail up to the top of the butte. Once on top there is a fun trail that goes all the way around the top. There are some fun rock structures and some easy scrambling. Overall good early spring hike.
Great short hike
Great first thing in the morning if you are going in the summer months.. it does get quite hot. This gets your heart pumping quickly. It is a beautiful view from the top of the whole valley. You see lots of beautiful rock formations and fun geology along the way. You can hike along the crater at the top which is fun, but makes it a bit longer hike.
