Gold Hill North Trail is a 5.7 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Sagle, ID that offers scenic views. The trail is rated as moderate offers a number of activity options. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
On this particular hike I'm torn; the hike itself was good, but the trail was not very impressive. Towards the top viewpoint the mountain was covered in dense fog and there was light snow. This made the surrounding forest eerie yet beautiful. Because of the fog I was not able to see the lake or Sandpoint from the lookouts. But aside from the fog towards the top of the mountain, the trail was relatively tame with not much to look at (Granted, this is in part due to the time of year). The trail also has a very unceremonious end off the side of a forest road.
Overall while I very much enjoyed the hike, it would be hard to recommend this one. I will need to try it again at different points in the year.
Fun hike for the whole family. Would do this hike again,
Hiked this today, great fall hiking for anyone
Perfect trail running or casual hiking trail
Popular trail for trail running. The grade near the bottom is moderate, but it gets easy about 1/3 of the way up. The closer to the top, the easier the grade.
Maintenance is excellent. The trail is wide, flat, very few rough spots, and not overgrown. No streams to cross, no junctions to get lost at.
It's pretty cool even on hot days. Its on the north side, which is the cool side. It is mostly shady, and by virtue of being by the lake it is likely to have a gentle breeze.
There are two viewpoints with benches overlooking the lake and Sandpoint. A bit past half way. Many people go to these viewpoints then turn around instead of going to the top. They are also a nice place to catch your breath.
This trail is listed as dog friendly, and there is a toilet at the trail head.
Location is great, about 10 minutes off the main highway between Sandpoint and CDA. Road is paved the whole way. Trail head is clearly signed.
I can't say enough good things about this trail, You could probably run it in about 90 minutes, which is a challenging length but not overdoing it.
Moderate difficulty, gorgeous scenery, great viewpoint, not too crowded!
Very well kept trail. It is a good uphill climb, but not too challenging. I'm pretty out of shape at this point and made it alright. Views are very nice.
Stop at the second lookout. If you continue past it is just another half mile that ends at a road. Not terribly exciting.
Great trail. Loved the views.
This is a wonderfully groomed trail with several great views of lake Pend Oreille
This is a great "last minute" hike because it is close to town (Sandpoint). It is not 11.5 miles to the viewpoint though, more like 4 roundtrip. Awesome view of Sandpoint, the lake, and schweitzer.
It was a great hike. The view was worth the hike!
I would say it is a bit more moderate in difficulty. Rewarding view at the top :)
Great hike! Nice view at the top!
Best hike I've done this year!
Nicely groomed trail with a great view.
One of my favorite trails in North Idaho. Awesome in the fall when the aspen and tamarack trees are changing. Be prepared to do a lot of switch backs, all rideable on a bike. Some of he best views of Sandpoint, Schwietzer moutain, and Lake Pond Orielle. Well worth the hike or ride up hill.
