Schofield Waikane Trail is a 11.7 mile out and back trail located near Honolulu, HI that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and camping and is accessible year-round.
This is a 7 mile hiking trail that requires permits from both the Schofield Military and the Department of Forestry and Wildlife in order to gain access. The first part of the trail traverses a 4WD road that passes through military land. At the end of the 4WD starts the hiking trailhead. Since this trail does not get a lot of traffic be prepared for the way to be somewhat overgrown. The reward at the end of the trail is the perfect view of Kahana Valley to the ocean. To the right will be Pu'u Keaumakua and to the right will be Pu'u Pauoa, ahead will be the pyramid peak of Pu'u Ohulehule.
We started the hike from California Avenue at about 8:45 am and got back out about 6:30 pm. Yeah its a long way to the end of the trail with a great view of Kahana valley and all the way to the ocean. The first part of the journey is quite boring with 2.5 miles on jeep road. The trailhead is well marked and the first portion of it is well cleared. Once past the fence line, the path is quite rough and the ground is full of holes. Be prepared for a muddy trail, windy and wet conditions, and rough terrain. If you can manage all that, you will truly be rewarded with a spectacular view!!!!

The permit process was straight forward and the Army and DLNR people were very helpful. We began the hike at 0800 and could not reach the summit without running out of time. Need to start at 0630. Need to call the range for both entry and exit. The phone number is on the Army permit. You can park in the Ranger compound but you could get locked in if not out by 1700. Wear long pants and long sleeves shirt.
Follow this two links, very accurate info.
Totally worth it.
Permits took me about 3 days to get. However, you need to requested them with 10 days in advance.
