Puu Maelieli Trail is a 2.3 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Kaneohe, Hawaii that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. Good quick afternoon hike. Beginning section can have some very slippery clay/mud that is a hassle on the way down. Great views of Kaneohe Bay. Fun to see the planes take off.
Best way to get there is park near the McDonalds and walk up the highway, keeping the townhouses on your left. The trail will be on your left directly after the guardrail stops.
I hiked this with my 22 week pregnant wife and my 2 year, 10 month old boy. We all did fine, but there were some challenging areas for my wife and child. Went on a day where it hadn't rained for about 24 hours prior and it was still a little muddy at the steep beginning, but it was a more clay-like texture. You could easily slip on it if you aren't careful, though. Other than that, it was a very fun hike with lots of beautiful scenery in the forest and amazing scenic vistas at different overlook points. The trees towards the top of the hike are fun because you have to duck and climb over quite a few, making for a fun adventure for the little one.The pillbox at the end has a gorgeous, expansive view.
Lovely hike when dry!
Fun hike, lots of uphills so somewhat challenging, but not killer. We were in/out in 1.5 hours. It was muddy, and we got drenched at the end.
fun little hike with the kids (5 and 7). definitely slippery when it rains even a little bit
Nice trail! Beautiful view of Kāne'ohe Bay and Chinaman's hat.
Nice hike with some great inclines!
Try to get this on the driest day if possible, it's eternally muddy. I wouldn't wear boots that are going to hold moisture—did it in chakos and was grateful for it despite the mess.
Bug spray is a must—mosquitos will get you through your clothes.
I did this with a 1 year old and a 3 year old, and we ended up having to carry the toddler the whole way. If your kid enjoys mud they can probably scramble up the climbs on their own. Take it slow, it's a steep climb but not difficult.
Don't be deceived by the first outlook; the bunkers and real view are further up and very gorgeous.
This hike is off Kahekili hwy, right behind the guard rail. we are little muddy on the initial incline, but the ground dried out the further I went. a couple steep inclines, but over all pretty easy. Doable for children and dogs. Great views of windward side at the end pillbox. would definitely recommend if you're looking for a short hike.
Doesn't seem to be as crowded as its neighbor, Lanikai Pillbox trail. This trail is in the lush, rainy, muddy windward side of Oahu. There are a few views and at least one small pill box before you reach the end of the trail at a large double decker pill box with grand North and East facing views. I only saw a couple of other people on mid day, mid week.
Easy little trail with a rewarding view of Kaneohe Bay once you reach the bunkers. First section turns into a mud slide if it's been raining at all-and it's the windward side so it rains all the dang time. So be prepared to get muddy and deal with mosquitos.
