This is a combination of quite a few areas for hiking, shopping, eating, beaching it, etc.. Never gets old, if you've gone on it more than once, there is always something you miss.. The northern most part can get a little congested with traffic, they were doing construction when I was there but with the view that I had. who cares about construction
Get the app Gypsy Guide. It cost a few bucks but you can download the around the island tour. It's like having a tour guide in the car with you. It has stops along the way for swimming spots, history you name it.
We've done this many times, it never gets old. The "guide" covers the whole trip around the North Shore from Honolulu up past the Dole Plantation, across the North Shore and then down the East Side. Each area has its great places to visit, to hike, to snorkel, to surf, to boat, to swim, to people watch, to enjoy God's country. Cool North Shore spots are the airfield on the west end, Camp Erdman - cool ropes course! Police Beach - find Sawyer's Tree - and the "Lost" filming sites, Turtle Beach, Waimea Beach Park - know that finding a parking spot will be really really hard; just pay your $10 across the street to park and you'll be glad you did - all the surfing beaches - Pipeline, Shark's Cove, get some shrimp from a shrimp truck, jump off Waimea Rock - and find the hidden trail from the west side of it - stop by some of the hotels to check them out, and just enjoy Oahu... oh and don't forget to stop by Matsumoto's Shave Ice... one thing to note - in winter surf's up, in summer, great for swimming...
