Nounou Mountain (Sleeping Giant) Trail is a 2.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Kapaa, HI that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Climb face of the fabled sleeping giant, and prey you don't wake him! Nounou Mountain rises from the leeward (Eastern) side of Kauai, known for some of the better island weather. Local legend tells of a giant who feasted so much at a party in his honor that he laid down for a nap and never awoke, and when you see the mountain's resemblance to a sleeping giant from the nearby town of Kapa'a you can see why the legend persists. This is a nice little hike if you're in the area, and a great way of sampling some of Kauai's exotic plantlife and bird population. Certainly it's not the greatest trail on the island (particularly when it's up against such stiff competition) but if you're planning to be spending some time around the leeward side soaking up some rays, then it's worth checking out. Elevation gain: - 1,100ft (from 200 - 1,300ft) The trail ends at a picnic shelter on the "chest" of the Sleeping Giant in Nonou Forest Reserve, where there are vistas of the ocean coastline, as well as inland to the Wailua River and Mount Waialeale. The west side trail joins this trail near the 1.5 mile post.
I hike this at least once a week if I can, it's the best exercise!
Vista views along the way...about 4 miles total round trip if you go from the trailhead on the app. Once you get to the picnic tables on top, you can keep going to the left to the "nose", which is narrow in places and very high!!! The sign says that the trail ends. Worth the view. Definitely more of a summit-type hike. The first 1.5 miles are switch backs with a moderate incline and the major reward (for me anyway) was at the tip top.
Very fun in and out trail with some great views. Moderate incline until the peak nice picnic tables on top. I will do this one again.
was so beautiful, and my 4 and 9 year Olds loved it!
Great hike, steep going up, beautiful scenery, a great workout, a hike you can do everyday!
Great hike. Not too difficult but has some tricky sections. Amazing views at the top and at several points along the way.
Excellent moderate trail with fantastic Vista views. Hiking sticks are strongly recommended, especially if it has rained within the past few days.
Beautiful vistas towards both Kapaa and Wailea Valley, trail is in good shape. Make sure you check out the 'nose' , 'chin' and cave at the top of the trail.
Definitely steep and muddy but fun
It was bit slippery and muddy after the rain but what a view when you get to the top.
This is a great trail that goes uo the east side of the "sleeping giant". When wet it can and will be very slippery. There is one spot about half way up where the trail is washed out....you can get by it you just need to be careful.
The views off this trail are fantastic!
The sleeping giant is one of the best hiking trails. The view of the island is almost 100 degrees. This trail will leave you with breath taking views and going to the top of the nose of the sleeping giant is incredibly invigorating. A relatively easy hike except for couple of spots. Bring good hiking shoes, water, a towel to wipe the mud, a change of shoes and a plastic bag to put your shoes in after. Take lots of pictures. Loved it loved it.
Great trail and good cardio workout on this side as it's 2 mi straight uphill. Mile markers at each 1/4 give you incentive. Beautiful views at the top, feel like you're at the top of the island. Def would do again and again
Great trail on the east side of the island, moderate difficulty offers great views as you make your way to the top. Remember to just follows the signs and stay on the trail
