Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail (Ka Iwi) is a 2.5 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Honolulu, HI that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. Great short uphill paved trail along sea cliffs to observation deck and lighthouse with fantastic views. A parking area offers access to the trailhead. Follow the trail as it climbs up the western side of the ridge. Upon reaching the top of the ridge (about the halfway point), the trail switches back to the north, following the eastern side of the ridge. At this point it levels out somewhat, but still climbs gradually to the summit, where a pair of guardrailed lookouts offer panoramic vistas. To return, retrace your route. The Makapuu Point trail, within Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline, offers outstanding views of Oahus southeastern coastline, including Koko Head and Koko Crater. From the trails destination at Makapuu Head, one is rewarded with magnificent views of the windward coast and offshore islets, as well as the historic red-roofed Makapuu Lighthouse built in 1909, which makes a stunning picture against the deep blue sea below (the lighthouse itself is off-limits). On a clear day, you may even see Molokai and Lanai. The offshore islets are wildlife sanctuaries for Hawaiian seabirds, such as the iwa, frigate bird, and tropicbird. This trail is an excellent place to view migrating humpback whales in season (November-May). Binoculars are suggested for viewing the whales and seabirds. An interpretive sign and viewing scope along the trail help you view and identify the whales seen from this location. This portion of the island tends to be hot and dry as evidenced by the abundant panini cacti and low-growing kiawe. The trail is exposed and is usually sunny and hot, as well can be very windy at the summit. Hat, sunscreen, and water are recommended. Give yourself about 2 hours to enjoy this hike and the great views. Many run up and down this trail for a great workout! Reference: http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/hiking/oahu/index.cfm?hike_id=23
Top notch payoff for a short hike. The trail is paved the whole way and easy for anyone to access. Multiple scenic overlooks give you great views in all directions. Heavily trafficed, but the trail is wide enough that it is not a big deal. The Lighthouse is wonderfully majestic overlooking the coast line. Those who commit to making it there for sunrise will be rewarded with a view found no where else.
Love this hike
Moderate incline paved road hike. Perfect views and checkpoints with benches if you need rest. Worth the extra time to head up to the pill boxes on the ridge and down to the lighthouse if you have time. Don't forget dragon nostrils blow holes and the tide pools. You can spend a good day here.
Paved hike to the top perfect for families. Beautiful ocean views and I head great place to spot whales!
Was a great easy first hike for my little ones 4, and 6. Beautiful views and easy
Super easy, great for dogs and kids.
great for views and anyone can make this hike
Nice views on the way up/down
It's a nicely paved trail, has a gorgeous view at the top of the Windward Coast. it's incline but with the trail being paved, it's stroller and kid friendly
Nice paved walkway with a good, challenging incline for a great workout. Park opens at 7a but you can go earlier if you park on the side of the road.
Even better at the lighthouse for sunrise
great views and an easy walk...the road is in good condition!
A beautiful must do walk!
This was a nice walk up the steep hill. The dog loved it; even though she wore herself out. View at the top is beautiful!
Easy walk. Good to see K bay and windward side ocean
This was my first trail in Oahu, so I was looking for something easy. And easy it was. The paved trail is perfect for beginners. There are no railings but there are several spots you can stop and take pictures or rest if you need to. The views from the top--well to be honest, the views from throughout the walk--are gorgeous. I would do this walk again, especially with visitors who are not used to trail walks.
Paved. Views are okay. Hike down to the tide pools if it is safe (a man and his daughter died the day before we went). Liw tide only.
