Great short uphill paved trail along sea cliffs to observation deck and lighthouse with fantastic views. A parking area offers access to the trailhead. Follow the trail as it climbs up the western side of the ridge. Upon reaching the top of the ridge (about the halfway point), the trail switches back to the north, following the eastern side of the ridge. At this point it levels out somewhat, but still climbs gradually to the summit, where a pair of guardrailed lookouts offer panoramic vistas. To return, retrace your route. The Makapuu Point trail, within Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline, offers outstanding views of Oahus southeastern coastline, including Koko Head and Koko Crater. From the trails destination at Makapuu Head, one is rewarded with magnificent views of the windward coast and offshore islets, as well as the historic red-roofed Makapuu Lighthouse built in 1909, which makes a stunning picture against the deep blue sea below (the lighthouse itself is off-limits). On a clear day, you may even see Molokai and Lanai. The offshore islets are wildlife sanctuaries for Hawaiian seabirds, such as the iwa, frigate bird, and tropicbird. This trail is an excellent place to view migrating humpback whales in season (November-May). Binoculars are suggested for viewing the whales and seabirds. An interpretive sign and viewing scope along the trail help you view and identify the whales seen from this location. This portion of the island tends to be hot and dry as evidenced by the abundant panini cacti and low-growing kiawe. The trail is exposed and is usually sunny and hot, as well can be very windy at the summit. Hat, sunscreen, and water are recommended. Give yourself about 2 hours to enjoy this hike and the great views. Many run up and down this trail for a great workout! Reference: http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/hiking/oahu/index.cfm?hike_id=23

Another trail that is great to do as a family. I usually take my grandson and push him on his stroller. It makes it a bit challenging to have something to push up as the hike is pretty easy. Great view!

Took the kiddos out in the stroller for this one. Hubs did the dirty work of pushing. Definitely an intense walk on the way up but it was still fairly easy. Great views most of the way up with a few different lookouts. Beautiful view from the top. Would definitely recommend to others.

Loved it! We went at the end of January last year and saw tons of humpback whales spouting and even breaching off in the ocean! The lighthouse was really cool too and and the view at the end was beautiful. On a clear day you can see the island Molokai way off in the distance.

I would suggest going later in the day or on a cooler day, as the pavement can get hot. I will definitely be going again this year to try and whale watch.

I carried my 8 month old at noon after walking to Peles Chair. It was HOT!

Very easy but would suggest exploring a bit. Be careful when going down to the dragons nostril, tons of lose rocks. Trail is marked by arrows on the way back up. We were just about to jump in the tidal pool when we saw a huge wave crash in and knock down to girls so be sure it's perfect weather and even then, be careful.

We did this trail on an overcast Monday morning, and it was very pleasantly empty. We passed only a few other groups of hikers the entire time we were there. We strayed from the main trail to explore the area around Dragon's Nostrils. We reached the bottom, but turned around because it began to rain, and we were worried about slipping on wet rocks. If you choose to do so, exercise caution, as climbing is required at some points. The lighthouse itself was great, and I can imagine that on a clear day, the views would have been spectacular. Overall, it was very enjoyable. We loved the views (despite the clouds) and had fun wandering off of the trail.

Great trail. Easy. People pushing strollers it's so easy. Can get pretty warm. Go check out the view from some pill boxes. It's worth it.

Top notch payoff for a short hike. The trail is paved the whole way and easy for anyone to access. Multiple scenic overlooks give you great views in all directions. Heavily trafficed, but the trail is wide enough that it is not a big deal. The Lighthouse is wonderfully majestic overlooking the coast line. Those who commit to making it there for sunrise will be rewarded with a view found no where else.
