Waikiki Beach Drive is a 1.7 mile moderately trafficked point-to-point trail located near Honolulu, HI that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking, nature trips, and scenic driving and is accessible year-round.
Stroll the world-famous beach or the adjacent Kalakaua Avenue Early Hawaiians named the 1.5-mile stretch of beachside land Waikiki-or "spouting water"-because it was once a marshland created by mountain-fed streams and gushing spring waters. Despite its swampy sites and smells, the area was still a favorite south shore retreat for Hawaiians who loved its beautiful sand. The beaches are still as stunning. But the marshlands are long gone, much to the delight of visitors who flock here from around the globe. Whether you're strolling down the beach or along Kalakaua Avenue, you'll find Waikiki a wonderland of sights, sounds and fragrant smells. This is a destination that demands exploring on foot since there are just so many delightful, delicious diversions tucked between hotels and even within them. And you can give each as much or little time as you'd like. Pop in to join a hula lesson. Relax with lunch looking out at the surf. People watch as you stroll along the beach. Window shop and stop for coconut ice cream. While the scene is often bustling, you can discover Waikiki at any pace you desire.
It's just sitting in traffic forever
Walk the entire Waikiki Beach early morning to miss the crowds or at sunset, especially if you like to people watch - you can walk all the way to Kapiolani Park from the Hilton – best spot to be in Waikiki in the summer is the Kapahulu Groin, enjoy watching bodyboarders, surfers, volleyball, and of course even though it says not to jump off, watching people jump off the groin. Great place to eat and chill is Duke's and there is always something happening along the beach. We rented a surfboard at the end of the day for $5 for an hour, and that was plenty of fun; during the summer, the waves off Waikiki are symmetrical, long and rolling - if you can stand up, you can get a nice long ride. Fireworks every Friday at the Hilton, definitely a great show. If you are on Oahu, Waikiki is the place for a stroll. Plenty of adventures around the rest of the island too!
