Banyans - Big Island is located near Kailua Kona, HI. The trail is primarily used for surfing and is accessible from June until February.
This is the most popular sufing spot on the Kona coast. Beautiful idylic setting midway along Alii drive. We often pull off onto the generous shoulder to view the waves. Surfers have to enter the water from a rocky shore, but the wave action (of moderate height) is nice c.100 feet out. Almost always sunny and the water a crystal clear, deep blue. Recently there has been heavy oppositiion by the local community against new development plans for this area. We highly encourage viewing several youtube videos of this bay (under "Kanuha Memorial" ) which features great shots of local Hawaiians absolutely at home, frolicking on the water, in a recent large, "paddle out" celebration of passage, in honor of a beloved local figure. At the north end of the bay is a restored historic Christian missionary stone church, worth visiting if you are in the area.
