Kapena is a small waterfall right in Honolulu. For a more adventurous hike go to the right of the metal building & take the rope down to the creek then hike upstream 5-7 minutes to the falls. Or go to the left of the metal building, walk the path through the weeds & then see the falls in 1 minute.

A very short hike but a hidden gem. Extremely easy and very beautiful. **wear big spray.

An easy walk but not worth the hordes of mosquito bite you will collect.

Great short trail

Very easy to access. You'll have to walk through the mortuary and towards the maintenance shed in the back. The entrance is on the left side. You can jump into this pool but I have a bad knee now and can't do that kind of stuff anymore. I did swim in it though. It's deep enough in the center.
Lots of mosquitoes.

A bit overgrown, a few rocks to climb over and quite a few indications that homeless live here. but they weren't around and it was a very short peaceful hike, even though you can hear (and eventually see) cars from the Pali Highway.

bring bug repellent!mosquitos love it here.

Nice leisure walk once your on the correct trail.

Go down the LEFT side of the maintenance shed for an easier stroll. Super easy for my 7 year old. The right side is not maintained and does require appropriate footwear. It does make it more interesting but just an FYI.

Be sure to use a quality mosquito repellent. We were devoured.

Lots of Mosquitos and the water doesn't look very clean. Signs of homelessness and rubbish.

Hard time with Star Rating:
+1-Star Location to the Pali Hwy. Literally, 5 minute walk. Along highway, leaving vehicle out for theft at lookout. Have to drive up to an exit from Hono, then U-turn back down to arrive at Lookout. 500 ft to scenic sign then hop over side of the cement divider.
+2-Star Short trail and not difficult. Rocky trail with vegetation, high canopy of banyans. Water ferns, thick sawgrass. Cross 10 ft Alapena Fall and head up another minute to 20ft bigger Kapena Falls.
+3-Star Two Falls and Petroglyph on backside of Alapena. Kapena boasts high jump spot but dirty water.
-1 Star Mosquitos and homeless plague the location like a deadly guardian of a hidden temple.
-1 Graffiti, trash, rock crossings and vague trail markings. Safety and security concerns.

Not that impressed. Pretty view for 5 minute hike but never saw the carvings. Just saw a bunch of homeless communities that screamed "no visitors".

The trail is fairly easy. The good part is the Nu'uanu petroglyphs which consist of three sites along the Nu'uanu stream behind the Nu'uanu Memorial Park Cemetery and the Royal Mausoleum near Alapena pool. The petroglyphs consist of as many as forty carved images mostly human figures and dogs.
