Jelks Preserve Trail is a loop trail located near Venice, FL. The trail is primarily used for hiking and birding.
Easy trails, well organized maps
This is a shorter hike, if it has rained recently then there will likely be flooding. A lot of really cool wildlife running around. Saw some armadillos and a big eastern diamond back rattle snake. Had a great day, just wish there was more to explore and some better views of the Myakka. The lack of views could have also been because of recent heavy rains. The water level was very high.
Saw the sign ducked in to investigate .. clean place wide trails doesn't seem like it's used much ... have to get my pack, boots and water and explore it a bit more.
I did not go on this trail as pets are not permitted but wanted to share that info for others. Looks like a great bird watching trail.
Jerks Preserve is a beautiful natural park. The trail has a loop of just over 3 miles and is an easy walk. There are many side paths and extra things to explore and would be great for responsible children, the trail is mostly sugar sand so be prepared for a challenge if your running. Lots of animal sign including deer, rabbit, gopher, moles and a lot of wild pig sign. Be safe and have fun :)
The trail is relatively well marked with sign posts and clear of debris. The grass is tall so tall socks or long pants are recommended. There is a good mix of shade and sunshine.
