Short, fun family outing. Real adventure, but not overwhelmingly difficult. Kids will love exploring at the top. Views on a clear day. Foundation of old fire tower makes great spot for lunch. Good dispersed camping along the route. Lots of aspen for great fall color. Trail is open June 15 through Nov. 30, weather permitting. Room to unload unlicensed OHVs at the bottom. For current conditions call Roosevelt National Forest, Canyon Lake Ranger District at (970) 295-6700. This trail is mostly easy but it gets steeper as you climb. Rocky, rutted and muddy in places. Aggressive stock SUVs with good articulation and high ground clearance can do it with a little off-road driving experience.
great trail, lots of campsites along the trail. couple good climbs on it.
This trail was closed when I went. They had two giant trees pulled infront of the trailhead. I went a little further down the road and found some random trails, so overall it was fun.
Really cool variety of woods on this trail-spooky areas with large bolders, tree graveyards, areas of tall, thin trees crowding each other for space. This trail was probably stunning 1-2 weeks ago but we missed most of the aspen colors-mostly fallen :( but still a cool hike. Lots of uphill and my knees took a beating on the way down but it was still fun. No hikers, just a few dirt bikers and ATV people but not annoying. I'm going to try and catch this next year earlier with hopes to see the aspens in full color.
I hiked this trail in early October. It was gorgeous with all the Aspen groves. The hike was fairly easy, uphill on an old mining road. It was by far one of the best hikes I had ever done when in search of Aspen in the fall. Really enjoyable and easy to find the trailhead.
