The first few miles undulate gently through meadows with good spots for lunch, relaxation, and great views. The trail climbs through aspen and mixed conifer forest, crossing numerous little creeks before switchbacking downhill.

Awesome day, October 1st, we'll marked, scenic trail. Packed in a lunch and near the end of the hike were rewarded by the sight of a huge bull moose near Piney Lake. Be sure to visit the Piney Ranch gift shop and restaurant near the trailhead.

Awesome trail so glad we went. Elevation change nothing significant, but you walk thru various tree types til you reach the falls. There the second week of September and the aspen leaves were well underway turning yellow. We hiked this trail less than 18 hours after flying in from Florida and we definitely felt it! Should have taken a little more time to acclimate- but the three of us made it easily enough. Took us an hour and 45 mins to hike back from the falls to the car.

Great Place, My favorite place to go near Vail, Co. Spent one night at the State campsite near the entrance to Piney Lake Ranch, 6 great sites over looking the mountains and Piney River,
Try it.

Beautiful hike through aspen forest.

Longer and steeper than I thought it would be. Bring food if it's around meal time and try to be down by 4pm to avoid storms.

We almost didn't attempt this hike due to the reviews of the road getting there. I'm so glad we did! We had no problems with the dirt portion of the road which took us about 40 minutes going about 20 mph in our Nissan sedan. (From Avon we arrived in 50 min).
The hike was spectacular! Such beautiful scenery and not crowded at all. We toted out 2 yr old in a baby backpack so we appreciated that the hike was not too strenuous. The Falls are more of a trickle this time of year but don't let that deter you. The hike is gorgeous nonetheless.
We didn't spent much time at the ranch but the lake is serene and looks like a nice place to camp. Very kid friendly experience.

The crazy drive really was part of the fun. Super scenic and sketchy drive. So many groundhogs and even an elk ducked off the dirt road when we drove up. Very scenic just sketchy on the way back down coming around corners when traffic is coming head on. Many spots nothing is on the side. Huge moose at opposite end of lake. My 9 year didn't want to do the hike to the waterfall so we just stayed by the lake which is beautiful

Awesome trail that starts out flat and then climbs slightly to the falls. Past the falls the trail gets really good and when you turn the corner in the valley to go to upper piney the trail is totally fricking awesome. The valley walls are super cool and the trail follows the creek which is soooo nice after the bend in the valley. Great camp sites and pretty easy to bush whack over the pass to Booth Lakes. Great over night backpacking trip whether you cross the pass to Booth or come out the way you came in. I would camp two nights if you attempt to cross the pass.

Great hike with young children. Amazing views, easy trails and we were the only people there for a few hours.
