The Citadel Summit Trail is a 8.9 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Bakerville, Colorado that offers scenic views and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail is primarily used for hiking, trail running, and rock climbing and is best used from June until October.
Great wildflowers in the frequent little meadows, although not the abundance of columbines as on the Herman Gulch side. Frequent squishy mossy soft spots around late snowmelt rivulets (watch where you put your feet). Lots of cardio work once you hit about 12,000'. A tough climb to the Citadel.
One of my favorite hikes! Mostly consist of open fields & forested sections with a few steep parts to get your pulse going. Definitely worth the trek to the top to see lake Herman.
