After our Cliff Palace tour we hiked to the 3rd largest and most accessible and preserved Spruce House Ruin, a great self-guided steep half-mile one-way tour where you can actually climb down into a covered kiva (rangers are available to answer questions). After Spruce Tree House we visited the gift store and just missed an authentic Ute dance on the patio. Easy way to experience the cliff dwellings if you don't want to wait for tickets for Cliff Palace or Balcony House.

Certainly an interesting historic site, but it's pretty crowded, especially with non-hikers, so expect to go fairly slowly. Wear plenty of sunscreen as it does get very hot and exposed.

This is a great self-guided tour of a very well preserved cliff dwelling. This dwelling is much easier to access then the other dwelling inside Mesa Verde National Park.
