Colorado Butte With a Beautiful View Just east of the Rampart Range section of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains the plains limestone buttes rise randomly across the plains. One of the largest of these rocky islands is Spruce Mountain, situated west of I-25 and north of the small town of Palmer Park, CO. Spruce Mtn. provides a delightful opportunity to enjoy views of Pikes Peak, Rampart Range, the Greenland Open Space, and the Palmer Divide. Douglas County has provided and excellent trailhead which includes a toilet. From the trailhead you can ascend to the top of the butte by a long shallow trail or by a short steep trail. The longer trail adds about a half mile to your hike. On the top of the butte is a shaded loop trail that allows for a tranquil walk among pine and fir groves. Punctuating the stillness, in the spring and summer, is a riot of wildflowers. The trail eventually takes you to Windy Point, where you can look over the edge at the valley 200 ft below, or look out to the south and marvel at Pike's Peak.

One of my favorite local hikes. Friendly people and not too difficult.

Fun with the family, not very busy. Nice views and cool breeze. Larkspur has a fun small town vibe.

I love hiking here! the trail kind of starts out in the sun, but fairly quickly enters into a treed area with beautiful views. there are minor switchbacks to get to the top, but it's fairly easy. I've also snowshoes here and that's super fun too!

Great running trail! Also great trail to hike with flat landers visiting the area who are not accustomed to the elevation.

Great trail, heavily traveled. Start early to beat the crowds and the heat.

It was a beautiful spot. Lots of sun and quite a bit of shade. Moderate seems like a the appropriate level. There were birds there that I've never seen before in Colorado and they were so vibrant in color. Next time I go I'll definitely have to trail run through it instead of hike. It seems perfect for that.

Gorgeous views off of a mountain that reminds me of Pride Rock

Quiet and gorgeous at the top. Lots of uphill climb but not too hard if it isn't your first rodeo.

Great views, easy trail, and well marked. Don't let the initial flat cow pasture part fool you. Its a real nice day hike :)

Very good hike! Most of your elevation gain is in the first 0.90 miles if you use Oak shortcut. Might be a little too steep for some little children.

Good trail. Parking is limited, so get there early. Lots of great views and lots of wildflowers blooming. Saw lots of families with kids that were 8 or younger that were being carried, so be prepared with the little ones.
