"The Crater" and surrounding open tundra slopes on Specimen and Shipler Mountains are closed year-round to all travel. The Crater Trail and adjacent off-trail areas north and west of Trail Ridge Road (with the exception of the Poudre River Trail), on both sides of the Crater trail, are closed pending the completion of an Environmental Assessment that addresses damage and threats to natural and cultural resources. This beautiful hike climbs through thick forest and tops out at the crater, just above treeline. It is illegal to climb to the actual peak because it is a wildlife protection area. But the hike to the crater offers spectacular views of Rocky Mountain National Park and the Never Summer Wilderness.

From the RMNP site on area closures:

Bighorn Sheep Closures - Year Round

"The Crater" and surrounding open tundra slopes on Specimen and Shipler Mountains are closed year-round to all travel. View a map of the closure. The Crater Trail and adjacent off-trail areas north and west of Trail Ridge Road (with the exception of the Poudre River Trail), on both sides of the Crater trail, are closed pending the completion of an Environmental Assessment that addresses damage and threats to natural and cultural resources.

This is an area closure, not just a trail closure. I believe it has been closed for a couple years.

Fun hike that I like to do whenever I'm in the area because it is pretty short and fast, but has some beautiful views. You are almost certain to see elk, deer, or bighorn sheep, and even the occasional bear.
