Meh. Ok if you are close and like urban hiking. Not enough shade for our liking.
The portion of the Rock Island Trail from Union to just west of Powers is primarily 10-12' concrete with the exception of the section from Circle to Academy (which is currently narrower asphalt with some large cracks - at least large enough to swallow up 80mm skate wheels). However, the good news is this section is planned to be upgraded to wide concrete this year. The Academy to Powers section is already five stars now in my opinion.
This is a great trail with some nice rolling hills (primarily east of Academy). Also, this trail is an old rail corridor, so it has nice open-space with clear areas off the sides of the trail.
The street-level crossing at the Academy/Constitution has a push button for the pedestrian signal to cross, but watch for those turning cars.
Parking for trail access can be found on street at Jefferson Park or Wasson Park near Circle Drive or at the north end of Victor Place off Powers. From the Powers trailhead, there is a short section of gravel trail before the concrete starts.
I always go here with my dog . It's an easy trail but close to my house.
