Race Track Trail is a 2.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Salida, Colorado that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, horses, and mountain biking and is accessible year-round. Dogs and horses are also able to use this trail.
From the intersection of Hwy 291 and Hwy 50 in Salida, drive east on Hwy 50 for 1 mile and turn right onto Burmac Road (first right after Big O Tires). Drive on Burmac Road for one-tenth of a mile and turn left into the Trail Head parking lot.
I missed the trailhead sign right at the very NE end of the parking lot and started walking up the access road for a little while before it connected back up with Race Track trail. There were some decent views, but it's a dry area with no water features. Good for trail running. There are only a couple steep spots. I went on a weekday afternoon in June, but only saw 3 mountain bikers going downhill and no other hikers.
I did this trail as a hike/run. There are some light elevation changes on the trail and some good views of the mountains to the west, hills to the north, and town below. This trail connects to a number of other trails on the Methodist Mountain Trail System; however, I just did an out-and-back this time.
