Luna Lake Trail is a 18.4 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Steamboat Springs, CO that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible from June until September.
Directions from Steamboat Springs: ACCESS #1: Go west on US Hwy 40 to County Road 129. Travel north on this road approximately 5 miles to Mad Creek and park in the lot behind the buck and rail fence. Hike about 7 miles into Swamp Park.
My family and I hiked this trail in 2012. Another trail we found out about it in Colorado's Incredible Backcountry Trails by David Day. The first day was perfect, we didn't see another hiker the entire time. We covered the entire distance in one day and reached Luna Lake before sunset. The scenery along the Wyoming Trail is spectacular and can be quite challenging at times. If you are looking for a good three day trip, this one is hard to beat.
