PLEASE NOTE: this road is a fairly difficult 4 wheel drive road with some steep drop offs. Directions from Carbondale: Travel south on Hwy. 133 for 25 miles past Carbondale to County road 3 and take the Marble turn to the left. Drive through Marble and past Beaver Lake. The road begins to head uphill and passes over shale rock (4WD needed). About 1 mile outside of Marble, there is a fork in the road, take road # 314 to the right. The road immediately heads downhill. It is about 5 1/2 miles to Crystal City. Pass through Crystal, head uphill and to the north about 1/2 mile. While heading uphill take the left fork in the road. It is a sharp left hand turn. This road leads to the trailhead in Lead King Basin.
We never even made it to the trailhead. In the "getting there" section describing this hike, the road description of "a fairly difficult 4 wheel drive road with some steep drop offs" should be rewritten. It is NOWHERE near an easy place to get to. The road is badly rutted & uneven, rocks jutting everywhere, steep incline, teeth rattling, gut wrenching ride. Be forewarned. The hike may be terrific but getting there could potentially do damage to your vehicle.
awesome 4x4 driving up and down to the trail head, be prepared to take it slow. The trail itself offers amazing view of the Maroon Peaks and a waterfall. Once you arrive at the lake, hop on a rock and enjoy one of the best views in Colorado
what a trip! Did an overnight pack trip and had a blast. definitely not for someone wanting a nice stroll as the elevation gain can be kind of tough. the view is worth it though.
An awesome hike that has a waterfall, and some great scenery all the way up the trail. The fishing is good for brook trout. Great place for photography.
awesome awesome!!! we left early in the morning and packed lunches and fishing poles it was beautiful and so very peaceful we spent all afternoon then a storm blew in lighting is pretty scary this far up so be prepared storms blow up without much warning. i do not recomend children under 10 unless they have been on trails like this before. i had such a wonderful time. cant wait to do this one again!!!!
