5 Point Gulch Trail is a 4 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Cotopaxi, CO that features a river and is good for all skill levels. Enjoyable easy+ hike into 5 Points Gulch. An easy hike into the gulch that stays mainly on the floor in a wash/creek. We turned around after going in 2 miles, but the trail continues on much further. Elevation gain is 650' in the first 2 miles. The trail head is unmarked, but can be found on the east end of the steel bridge.
This is a poorly marked trail - trailhead isn't designated clearly with signage, you won't find the trail on most maps, and the whole thing is very difficult to follow and not well maintained. Lots of loose rock and gravel and very steep slopes, so you have to be careful with your footing. You won't even find stone markers to guide you. However, if you cross the road and take the paved riverside walk, there are some nice (but very short) paths to follow down to the river and a nice area for kids to play or to sit and relax by the river.
Maybe I'm missing something, but this trail was VERY difficult to follow. It petered out after about 3/4 of a mile. It seems like in dry times you'd just follow the stream bed, but since there was a rain the night before I went, the stream was far from dry. My trail run was very short and confusing and I had to turn back much earlier than planned. :(
