Woodson Mountain via Hwy 67 is a 4.5 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Ramona, CA that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Mt Woodson via Hwy 67 offers breathtaking vistas. This hike is moderately strenuous, and easy to access due to its convenient location. In the summer, be sure to take enough water, it gets extremely hot and dry! The views to the ocean and to Palomar Mountain to the East are worth the effort. There is a longer but more gradual way to the top, via Lake Poway that is more often travelled. https://alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mt-woodson-via-lake-poway-trail
One of my favorite hikes. I love the paved roads and the awesome views. It's all uphill which is also a great workout! I'm always intrigued when I see people hiking up at dusk when I'm heading down as I'm not a night hiker. I never want to encounter any hungry wildlife after dark so I will pass on the night hike experience!
Faster way to get to potato chip rock
Beautiful views! Leads right to potato chip rock from the 67 Ramona side.
Paved road most of the way, steep in parts, scenic and great views.
Good workout hike, all asphalt, gets pretty crowded, lots of people coming up this way to go to Potato Chip Rock. Bring lots of water, not much shade, pretty steep most of the way up
Pretty steep for beginners or if you are out of shape. Asphalt trail to the summit... Great views. Dogs allowed
Good hike if you dont like dirt trails or a serious hike. Good "date" hike but rather boring if you are a serious hiker as there are loads of people and nearly the whole thing is asphalt
This is great for some serious trail running. Once you get to the top go past the Potato chip rock and you can run down the asphalt road. This adds about 4 miles total and you get an additional 1K ft of elevation. I went through 70 ounces of water so bring your pack. Great place to run by yourself since there are lots of people around. Negatives are how popular the trail is. Try to do it early and on a weekday if you can. Very possible to do both sides (11 miles total) in under 2 hours 30 minutes.
Potato chip rock kept us going on the trail. We had good amount of snacks and water and it was a nice experience. The trail was challenging near the end when there is a fair amount of incline. The legs were jelly for a while but the views were nice along the way. Potato chip rock meant waiting for ~1 hour to get that picture. But may be it was worth it :)
Just two stars because it's paved the whole way. Great work out though, lots of climbing. This route is shorter and steeper than coming via Lake Poway.
I recorded and uploaded the track titled may92015.
This is the Short paved route up to Potato Chip Rock. You have to park by the highway (Julian Rd/ Route 67). Done this hike few times now and has a great scenery. From the road to the Chip is about 4.3 miles.
Leave at sun rise if you dont want to wait long to take a pic on the Chip.
Park on the street in front of the fire station. There should be a line of cars so it should be easy to find. It is a paved path 95% steep grade up hill. I noticed several people who had passed us come down a little too quickly. I had to educate people about the trail. When you go up on this side and reach the top you need to take the trail to the right past the cell towers. A short distance downhill and you will reach potato chip rock. Besides this one rock there are numerous photo opportunities and great views. We took our time coming down. In the morning we got great photos of the valley covered in the marine layer and it didn't take long for that to burn off and you could see downtown.
Potato chip rock is just a rock. There's nothing great about it. The hike was fine but there's no reason for so much buzz over a rock.
Parked on Hwy 67 close to the fire station. We went up a little later than we wanted to but it was perfect timing. A little over an hour getting to the top taking a few breaks along the way. Steep incline. Once you reach the top continue pass the towers and potato chip rock will be a little down the dirt path on the right. The views are amazing and sunset is perfect up there! We only had to wait for 2 groups but had to be quick because the sun was setting and we wanted everyone to be able to get a picture. It gets chilly quick but the paved road makes it easy hiking after sunset. Bring a flashlight and a jacket if hiking after dark. My dog did great and even made it on the rock with me!
Hiked from the Ramona side. Steep incline on a paved trail. Beautiful views of Ramona and the mountains. Once you reach the top there are beautiful views of Poway, on a clear day you can see the ocean.
Long line to take a picture on Potato Chip Rock.
