Woodson Mountain via Hwy 67 is a 4.5 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Ramona, CA that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Mt Woodson via Hwy 67 offers breathtaking vistas. This hike is moderately strenuous, and easy to access due to its convenient location. In the summer, be sure to take enough water, it gets extremely hot and dry! The views to the ocean and to Palomar Mountain to the East are worth the effort. There is a longer but more gradual way to the top, via Lake Poway that is more often travelled. https://alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mt-woodson-via-lake-poway-trail
Awesome trail, great workout, steep paved road leads to potato chip rock.
Love this hike! It's a faster way to the top of Woodson by far. I can usually get to the top in just under an hour. I like the paved road, amazing views, and weaving thru giant boulders! This is also a big hang out for climbers. If your lucky you'll see them in action. If your thing is to stand on potato chip rock for that iconic picture...start early or stay later! The big downer of this hike is the traffic. There is usually a line at the rock. People take turns and it can make for awkward moments trying to be silly or cool while trying to hurry.
One of my favorite hikes. I love the paved roads and the awesome views. It's all uphill which is also a great workout! I'm always intrigued when I see people hiking up at dusk when I'm heading down as I'm not a night hiker. I never want to encounter any hungry wildlife after dark so I will pass on the night hike experience!
Faster way to get to potato chip rock
Beautiful views! Leads right to potato chip rock from the 67 Ramona side.
Paved road most of the way, steep in parts, scenic and great views.
Good workout hike, all asphalt, gets pretty crowded, lots of people coming up this way to go to Potato Chip Rock. Bring lots of water, not much shade, pretty steep most of the way up
Pretty steep for beginners or if you are out of shape. Asphalt trail to the summit... Great views. Dogs allowed
Good hike if you dont like dirt trails or a serious hike. Good "date" hike but rather boring if you are a serious hiker as there are loads of people and nearly the whole thing is asphalt
This is great for some serious trail running. Once you get to the top go past the Potato chip rock and you can run down the asphalt road. This adds about 4 miles total and you get an additional 1K ft of elevation. I went through 70 ounces of water so bring your pack. Great place to run by yourself since there are lots of people around. Negatives are how popular the trail is. Try to do it early and on a weekday if you can. Very possible to do both sides (11 miles total) in under 2 hours 30 minutes.
Potato chip rock kept us going on the trail. We had good amount of snacks and water and it was a nice experience. The trail was challenging near the end when there is a fair amount of incline. The legs were jelly for a while but the views were nice along the way. Potato chip rock meant waiting for ~1 hour to get that picture. But may be it was worth it :)
Just two stars because it's paved the whole way. Great work out though, lots of climbing. This route is shorter and steeper than coming via Lake Poway.
I recorded and uploaded the track titled may92015.
This is the Short paved route up to Potato Chip Rock. You have to park by the highway (Julian Rd/ Route 67). Done this hike few times now and has a great scenery. From the road to the Chip is about 4.3 miles.
Leave at sun rise if you dont want to wait long to take a pic on the Chip.
