Located in Temecula just off S Hwy 79 in the private resort of Vail Lake. The trail outlined is a 2 mile loop along the lake itself. The trail described is just a small section of the trails surrounding Vail Lake. I selected a quick 2 miles with maximum lake view. The trail takes you up into a peninsula where, for a small time you see Vail Lake to either side. The trail has steep climbs to start, and then about a mile of easy walking just over halfway in, you start to make the loop at which point you will drop down to lake level then follow a ridgeline to the pinnacle of the hike. This portion is not easy. At some points there is a 37% incline. The trail is always in view of the lake, and you will even catch views of Mt San Jacinto and San Gorgonio.

The trails were primarily dirt roads. Trail maps did not distinguish between roads and hiking trails. Nothing special. Also, there was some occasional piece of trash on the trail. Nice views and always good to get outside, though. One cool part was a road/trail was blazed right on some ridge lines.

Did the Spartan race here. Amazing hike. Beautiful view! Definitely challenging, for me at least. Can't wait to go back!!

Ran the Spartan Sprint here in 2013. It was a tough run up and down the trails and through the mud and water. Definitely need plenty of water during the hotter weather. I ran it in January and still got my butt kicked! The view from the higher elevations is awesome...well, not so much when you can't breathe and cramping in your quads! LMAO

Went over labor day weekend. Had to pay 5 bucks and sign a form to get in but worth it. Took the dam climb which looks gated off but just swing your bike around. Its a fire road for the beginning then at the damn turns into a crazy ridge line. If you do not want to walk your bike i suggest taking the single tracks instead of the dam climb because damn you'll be climbing. Not for beginners because the down hill is crazy i went on level three and had to walk down half of it. Hopefully you have a frs for that downhill because a hard tail is well.. Hard. Good luck have fun.
